The Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa (AHCT) offers Poetry Out Loud, a national arts and humanities program that culminates in poetry recitation contests. Through participation in Poetry Out Loud, students learn about their literary heritage, develop useful study habits and self-confidence, and truly engage with poets and poems through memorization and public recitation.
The program provides a teacher’s guide with lesson plans that are easily incorporated in the classroom and fulfill most NCTE English Language Arts Standards. Toolkits include: the new Teacher’s Guide, the “Learning Recitation” DVD, and two posters. A print anthology and CD are available on a limited basis by special request. Please note that the “LearningRecitation” DVD is an updated and redesigned version of the “Best Performances” DVD. The Poetry Out Loud website features an extended anthology of poems and other resources (www.poetryoutloud.org).
AHCT also offers free Poetry Out Loud workshops for teachers and students that model recitation techniques, emphasize the usefulness of memorization, and help students to read and discuss poetry.
