STUDIO AND RESIDENT VISUAL ARTIST PROPOSAL
The application period is now closed. The Hardesty Arts Center Gallery Panel will meet to review applications, interview selected candidates and make final recommendations to the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa Board of Directors.
The AHHA Studio and Resident Visual Artist program fosters visual art-making, direct engagement, collaboration and partnerships. Meaningful connections between AHHA and diverse audiences are nurtured and supported. All Studio and Resident Visual Artists are considered a vital part of the AHHA community and its programming.
Local and visiting artists create atop a four story visual art center in the heart of the new Brady Arts District in downtown Tulsa. Local artists rent studios located side by side with live/work spaces for visiting artists. Studios surround a common space designed to inspire incidental collaboration and interaction between local, national and international artists. Each studio looks out onto a green roof and the urban landscape beyond. Artists have access to state-of-the-art 2, 3 and 4D classrooms, a darkroom, and media lab.
Artists are chosen through a panel selection process. The panel is made up of artists, curators and other arts professionals from Tulsa and elsewhere. Individual artists may submit proposals to become a Studio or Resident Artist by completing an online form. Proposals are accepted from US and non-US artists. Artists incorporating both traditional and new mediums are encouraged to apply. Mediums must be principally visual, but other arts mediums may be incorporated into the artist’s work. Such mediums may include, but are not limited to, spoken
word, music and other sound, dance, film and theatre.
RESIDENT VISUAL ARTISTS
Each spring and fall Visual Artists in Residence exhibit in the galleries and become a part of the community through participatory arts activities in the galleries and offsite. AHHA offers 6161 SF of interior gallery space and an outdoor sculpture park for exhibitions. Residencies may last for a period of up to twelve weeks. Residents work onsite in an area designed for optimum collaboration with other visiting resident and local studio artists. An honorarium is provided, along with a materials fee that supports art-making, the exhibition and community projects. When appropriate, Residents are asked to donate a work of art to the exhibition’s presenting sponsor.
The main focus of year-long residencies for five local artists is active art-making. Artist complete a self-defined project. Additionally, artists engage with community and visiting artists. Studios are approximately 300 square feet and accommodate a variety of mediums. The monthly rental fee is $125, which is purposefully set below market value for affordability. In exchange, artists are asked to participate in Open Studios periodically throughout the year, and contribute a negotiated service that may include teaching, mentoring, gallery support or other work at AHHA. Sponsors will be sought, but not guaranteed, to help subsidize the cost of the Studios. When appropriate, Artists are asked to donate a work of art to a Studio Sponsor.
