2008 Oklahoma Chautauqua
The Perfect Gift for Your Community

Here’s a gift your whole community will enjoy: Unpack those love beads and bellbottoms and apply now to host the 2008 Oklahoma Chautauqua. The 1960s-based theme is sure to be a crowd-pleaser—a reason to reminisce over yearbook photos and old LPs, to remember how we sang along with Bob Dylan, “The times they are a-changin’,” and were moved to change the world.

This year’s theme, A Time for Every Purpose: America in the 1960s, will examine the turbulent decade that gave rise to issues such as civil rights, environmental awareness, and the women’s movement. A tentative list of characters includes:

Malcolm X (1925-1965), internationally revered, though controversial, spokesman for universal human rights
George Wallace (1919-1998), Governor of Alabama, known for his segregationist stance
Barry Goldwater (1909-1998), U.S. Senator from Arizona, credited for reigniting the conservative base of the Republican Party
Betty Friedan (1912-2006), author of The Feminine Mystique
Rachel Carson (1907-1964), environmentalist and author of Silent Spring
Julia Child (1912-2004), American chef, author, and TV personality

Oklahoma Chautauqua is a partnership of the Oklahoma Humanities Council (OHC) and the Arts & Humanities Council of Oklahoma. With five days and nights of workshops, local entertainment, and educational re-creations of people from history, Chautauqua is one of the best cultural tourism events in the state.

There is high demand for this valuable program, so don’t miss this opportunity. For information and host site applications, contact OHC Program Director David Pettyjohn at: (405) 235-0280 or david@okhumanitiescouncil.org.

Application deadline is February 1, 2008.
